Marathon Checklist

After all the training involved in marathon preparation, you don't want to remember the race for the sunburn. Here is a checklist of things you might considering wearing, taking, and consuming for an out-of-town marathon.

  • Things to wear or carry

    • Race number

    • Running shoes

    • Singlet

    • Shorts

    • Socks

    • Heart Rate monitor (if you use one)

    • Handkerchief

    • Money for phone, cab

    • Key for vehicle or room

    • Males: Bandaids on nipples (Nipguards, or the cheaper Curex round bandaids work fine)

    • Sunscreen

    • Vaseline for feet and other areas that might chafe (or Body Glide) -- but be careful where you put the "cold weather Body Glide"

    • Sunglasses

    • In cold weather

      • Hat

      • Gloves

      • Garbage bag or disposable clothes to wear to the start

    • Other suggestions

      • toilet paper in a plastic bag

  • Things to eat on the run
    • Whatever you've trained with
      • Gels
      • Powerbar -- cut up into pieces 
  • Things to take to an out-of-town marathon
    • Registration information
    • Cell phone and charger
    • Safety pins
    • Sandals or other post-race shoes
    • Water bottles
    • Gatorade, other electrolyte drink
    • Breakfast
    • Glasses/contact lenses and solution
    • Radio/alarm clock
    • Book or newspaper
    • Extra shoe laces
  • Breakfast
    • Coffee or Mountain Dew
    • Powerbar
    • Banana
    • Water
