Founded in 1983, the Second Wind Running Club is Champaign-Urbana's premier running and walking club. Membership is open to all ages and levels, from beginning walkers to seasoned runners. With nearly 500 members, there is truly something for everyone.

Monday Run Day: Our "Parents Run" meet Monday's 6:15pm at Lodgic Everyday Community for Monday Runday. Happy Hour is from 6pm to 8pm.
Trying to balance running and parenting can be difficult! We work hard on continually improving our club, so we added another weeknight fun run in Champaign starting August 2019 especially for Second Wind families. This would be an opportunity for parents to enjoy a weeknight run, keeping the kids involved, and incorporate a good pre-run workout courtesy of the personal trainers at Pursuit Fitness. Not only do we envision this as a chance to get outdoors and improve your health, but also to connect with other families who also love running!

Tuesday: We are switching to the Winter Fun Runs starting October 29, 2019 (a week after the fall pizza party) at the UofI ARC during the Winter months. Our Summer Fun Runs begin from Meadowbrook Park during the Spring and Summer months (a week after the spring pizza party). Both start at 6:00pm. There is a post run fun meetup after the fun run at a rotating list of bars and restaurants in Champaign-Urbana.

The Summer Fun Runs explore the running paths through Meadowbrook Park in Urbana in the spring and summer. We run along the running paths through Meadowbrook Park xas featured in the Illinois Marathon.
  • Our fun run coordinators will meet you in front of the park pavilion on Windsor Road at Vine Street
  • Members run a combination of 1 and 2 mile loops all on sidewalks (run as much or as little as you desire).

The Winter Fun Runs are a 3 mile loop once or twice through campus, all on sidewalks with streetlights.
  • Our fun run coordinators will meet you at the ARC entrance at 201 E Peabody Drive (on campus).
  • Members run either a 3 or 4 mile loop all on sidewalks (run as much or as little as you desire).
  • We very strongly encourage you to bring lights and wear reflective gear for your safety.
  • Runners tend to park at the UofI Law Library lot (E15) at the corner of 4th St. & Pennsylvania, just east of the ARC.

Please note, when conditions are bad the group may meet at the U of I Armory to use the indoor track (any last minute notices are posted on our Facebook pages). UofI charges the general public a small fee ($3 individual/$5 family) to use this facility if you are not a campus recreation member.
Wednesday: We are currently on the Winter Speedwork schedule. Speedwork begins at 6pm. Speedwork could vary between track and hill workouts.
  • Runners of all speeds are welcome to attend.
  • Come participate in a fun and different workout each week. 
  • Meeting locations vary so check the weekly email.
  • The Winter Speedwork meets at the UofI Armory on campus (at Fourth and Gregory). If the weather is nice speed work may be outside. If the weather is not nice, expect to work out on the indoor track. The armory charges a $3 charge per night and monthly and quarterly passes are available.   • The Summer Speedwork meets at the Arboretum. Our fun run coordinators will meet you in the parking lot on Lincoln Ave and St Mary's Road (for directions, please go to https://arboretum.illinois.edu/maps_directions/)

Thursday: 4 mile route starting at 6:00pm from Riggs Beer Company on High Cross Road (check out the weekly updates to confirm).
  • The route: From Riggs Beer Company, run south, turn onto Stone Creek Drive and follow it around to Windsor Road. Run east to High Cross Road and take it back to Riggs.
  • Members generally run a 4 mile loop (run as much or as little as you desire).
  • Afterwards runners are welcome to stay for refreshments (food is often provided by a food truck).
  • Invite friends and family to run or just to hang out with us afterwards.
Saturday (summer long runs): Summer & fall marathon training long runs.
  • These runs are bare bones "self supported" long runs to help supplement your training for your full and/or half marathons of choice (Indy Monumental; Chicago; Naperville; Abe's Trail Trek; Mattoon Santa Chase; etc).
  • Water and/or gatorade will be provided when our coordinators are available.
  • This program does not have any designated pace leaders.
  • If you desire to join our program with designated pace leaders, please check out our half and full Christie Clinic Illinois Marathon Training program that begins in January (registration opens on October 1).
Board Meetings: Third Tuesdays at 7:15pm at the Urbana Free Library in the Satthertwaite conference room in the basement. The November meeting will be at the Champaign Public Library on West Green Street. Check out the agendas here.
